Community Services Minister Denise Peterson-Rafuse presented Spryfield’s Edward Jost Children’s Centre with more than $1.5 million. The funding will help the centre build a second building, doubling capacity and allowing it to accommodate infants. Subsidies may be available for qualified families to take advantage of the 300 additional child-care spaces.
Our annual clean-up of the Williams Lake area will take place on Saturday, October 17, from 9:30-12 noon. We hope you’ll plan to join us for this community event. It is to be an annually celebrated day that focuses on school indoor environment quality, and includes both existing school facilities and new school construction. The Urban Farm Museum Society of Spryfield is hosting it’s annual Seedy Saturday on April 18th, 2009 from 2-4:30pm at the Captain William Spry Centre (10 Kidston Rd.). Come out and take part in the seed exchange, workshops, and children’s activities. Plants, cuttings, and an abundance of information will also be available to those who are interested.
“The Incredible Years”, an intensive 12-week course on parenting youth with or without history of conduct problems will be offered on Wednesday mornings from April to June in Spryfield. The course is the same one used by the IWK hospital. Parents who follow the

The meeting been organized by the Sable Island Green Horse Society and the Ecology Action Centre, and is co-hosted by Saint Mary’s University, the World Wildlife Fund, the Nova Scotian Institute of Science, and Leonard Preya MLA, Halifax Citadel-Sable Island.

On February 21 2009 at 1 pm at the Captain William Spry Centre on Sussex Street in Spryfield, the Mainland South Heritage Society will hold their annual Heritage Display and Tea. The theme this year will honour Peter Saulnier, a local resident who was deeply involved in his community as a founder of the Heritage Society and as portraying one of Santa Claus’s special helpers who stood in for him for over 30 years in parades and at local malls. Peter is also responsible for building over 50 models of historic homes in the area so future generations can have a small idea what once was. As well he collected many historic photos, Along with his models, the photos and other memorabilia will be on display.
Homeowners and small businesses who suffered uninsurable losses from heavy rainfall Aug. 29 to 31, can apply for up to $80,000 to replace or repair basic, essential personal property under the province’s disaster financial assistance program. Damage to cottages,
